Kamal Haasan’s ‘Thug Life’ Trailer Sparks Age-Gap Controversy

by Chris Davies

The makers of Kamal Haasan’s highly anticipated movie Thug Life released its trailer yesterday, offering audiences a gritty look into a violent gangster world that spans several decades. While the trailer has been widely praised for its intense action sequences, one particular scene has sparked a heated debate online.

The controversial moment features Kamal Haasan sharing an intimate scene with actress Abhirami, where his character places his hand on her chest before the two share a kiss. Adding to the discussion, Kamal’s character delivers the line, “Madam, I’m your only Adam,” directed at Trisha Krishnan.

The controversy largely stems from the nearly 30-year age difference between Kamal Haasan and Abhirami, leading some viewers to label these scenes as “unnecessary” and unsettling. Initially, many social media users mistakenly believed Abhirami was portraying Trisha’s character, but it was later clarified that Abhirami plays Kamal Haasan’s wife in the film.

Reactions on social media have been mixed. Some argue that intimate scenes involving significant age gaps should not be normalized, while others defend the scenes as part of the film’s fictional narrative and storytelling, asserting that they do not cause discomfort.

One user commented, “This is the problem with us… focusing too much on kiss and intimate scenes from the whole trailer… it seems normal and usual… stop giving it so much attention.” Another wrote, “Doing such scenes at his age with heroines almost half his age is not normal or usual.” A third user on X remarked, “Even in 2025, this is what caught your eye in a trailer by Mani Ratnam starring Kamal Haasan, STR, and others? That’s all you have for brains. Nobody can change you.”

Alongside Kamal Haasan, the trailer also features notable actors including Trisha Krishnan, Aishwarya Lekshmi, Sanya Malhotra, and Joju George. The film boasts a stellar technical team with A. R. Rahman composing the music, Ravi K. Chandran handling cinematography, and Sreekar Prasad as editor.

Thug Life is scheduled for release in theaters on June 5, 2025.
