Longtime collaborators Graham King and Ray Winstone are joining forces to produce It’s a Fcking Liberty*, a gripping crime drama series that delves deep into six decades of London’s East End gangland saga. The series, currently in development, promises an unflinching portrayal of power, betrayal, and survival in the city’s underworld, marking King and Winstone’s first television collaboration.
Produced under King’s GK Films banner with Hayley King as co-executive producer, the show will be written by Paul Tomalin, known for his work on Shameless and Netflix’s Bodies. Winstone will also serve as an executive producer and is likely to appear on screen, lending his iconic presence to the story.
It’s a Fcking Liberty* is described as an epic crime family saga centered on a formidable matriarch’s rise during the turbulent 1970s. The narrative threads through a labyrinth of bent cops, ruthless politicians, and the violent machinations of post-WWII gang networks. Subplots explore key historical events, including the mainland IRA’s bombing campaigns and their lasting effects into the 21st century, offering audiences a richly textured and authentic view of London’s gritty past.
Reflecting on the project, Winstone said, “For years, Graham and I have wanted to create something that truly captures the heart of London. We know the streets, the people, and the stories—now, with Paul’s writing, we’re bringing that reality to the screen in a way that’s raw, real, and unforgettable.”
King echoed this enthusiasm, adding, “Growing up, I was captivated by crime movies like Get Carter and The Long Good Friday. This series allows us to tell London’s story from an insider’s perspective, rooted in authenticity and lived experience. Ray’s talent and insight make this a truly special collaboration.”
GK Films has an impressive track record with projects nominated for 71 Academy Awards, including the Oscar-winning Bohemian Rhapsody and Martin Scorsese’s The Departed, in which Winstone also starred. Upcoming productions include the Michael Jackson biopic Michael and a Bee Gees story in development.
Hayley King, executive producer, emphasized the show’s fresh take on the gangster genre: “Our goal is to honor London’s legacy while injecting new energy and a contemporary perspective, creating a series that resonates with today’s audiences.”
Meanwhile, Winstone continues his role as Bobby Glass in Season 2 of Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series The Gentlemen and recently appeared in Netflix’s Damsel and the British indie A Bit of Light. Tomalin brings his experience from Bodies and other acclaimed TV projects, ensuring It’s a Fcking Liberty* is anchored in strong storytelling.
