As the Annecy International Animation Film Festival concluded, Chinese animation powerhouse Gold Valley Films (GVF) and Türkiye’s Siyah Martı Animation Studios officially signed a co-production agreement for the upcoming CGI animated feature Nils Holgersson: The New Adventure. This cinematic movie adaptation reimagines Selma Lagerlöf’s timeless Scandinavian classic, blending folklore with modern storytelling.
Co-directed by Jason Reisig, known for his work on Smallfoot and as supervising animator for Kung Fu Panda and Trolls, alongside Leo Liao, whose credits include Little Emma and Kung Fu Mulan, the film follows a mischievous 12-year-old boy who is magically shrunk and embarks on an epic journey across Sweden on the back of a farm goose. The narrative weaves fantasy and folklore with themes of empathy, environmental consciousness, and personal growth.
“This co-production marks a significant milestone in our mission to create animation that resonates globally,” said Allen Tsang, Head of International at GVF. “Nils Holgersson is a story of transformation, and our partnership with Siyah Martı unites creative talents from Asia and Europe.”
Roger (Qing) Chen, CEO of GVF, emphasized the project’s alignment with the studio’s vision: “Our goal is to tell culturally rich, emotionally impactful stories that appeal universally. We are thrilled to collaborate with partners who share our dedication to quality family entertainment filled with heart and purpose.”
Siyah Martı Animation Studios, led by Nurullah Yenihan and recognized for family hits like Nasreddin Hodja and Captain Pengu, as well as the forthcoming Zero Waste Busters, expressed enthusiasm for the project. “Partnering with GVF on this timeless tale allows us to bring Scandinavian folklore alive for new audiences,” Yenihan remarked.
The co-production deal was facilitated by Frédéric Puech, founder of Paris-based PlayBig, who will also oversee pre-sales. International sales and distribution responsibilities rest with GVFI. Production is already underway, with a global release scheduled for 2026. Casting announcements are anticipated later this year.
This collaboration highlights the growing trend in the film industry of cross-continental partnerships, particularly in the animation sector, to deliver compelling stories that appeal to diverse audiences. Fans of adventure movie plots can look forward to a fresh take on a classic journey with Nils Holgersson: The New Adventure.
