‘A Hard Place’: Monsters Clash in Desert Horror Movie

by Chris Davies

The distinction between “monster” and “creature” has always been a blurry one, with the terms often used interchangeably in the world of horror films. However, in the upcoming indie horror-thriller A Hard Place, monsters and creatures are clearly defined as separate entities—each with their own deadly agenda. Set to be released on VOD on May 27, this film promises to bring audiences a thrilling ride through an ancient battle of monstrous proportions.

In A Hard Place, a group of criminals, reeling from a botched job that leaves a trail of bodies, seeks refuge in a secluded desert hideout. However, their plans quickly unravel when they realize that the area is home to something far worse than the law: a brutal, ancient war between monstrous predators—those that rule the day and those that rule the night. As tensions rise and the body count grows, the criminals must decide whether to trust each other or face the creatures hunting them.

The film stars genre favorites including Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Lynn Lowry (Shivers), Rachel Amanda Bryant (M.F.A.), Kevin Caliber (Future Man), Ashley Undercuffler (Craving), Glenn Plummer (Saw II), Sadie Katz (Wrong Turn 6), and Bai Ling (The Crow). The film is directed by J. Horton (Craving), who co-wrote the script with Michael J. Epstein (Clickbait).

“A Hard Place has been by far the most ambitious project I’ve ever made,” said Horton. “This movie would not exist without the incredible talent, generosity, and good spirits of our cast and crew, as well as our cinema partners.”

In the true spirit of low-budget indie films, the production has also embarked on a nationwide tour, with the filmmakers taking A Hard Place to theaters and drive-ins across the country. Horton expressed the unique joy of sharing the film with diverse audiences: “It’s been a complete joy to see the movie with multiple audiences, which is something a lot of independent movies don’t get the opportunity to do.”

Stay tuned for A Hard Place when it releases on VOD this May—an intense, creature-infested journey that horror fans won’t want to miss.
