Taraji P. Henson Stars in Netflix Thriller ‘Straw’

by Chris Davies

Taraji P. Henson makes a powerful dramatic debut as a struggling single mother in the first trailer for Straw, a gripping new movie from Tyler Perry set to premiere on Netflix on June 6. The film also features an ensemble cast including Sherri Shepherd, Teyana Taylor, Glynn Turman, Sinbad, Rockmond Dunbar, Mike Merrill, and Ashley Versher.

Straw centers on Henson’s character, a woman battling a relentless series of hardships that push her into a desperate and unforeseen situation. Confronted with overwhelming obstacles, she finds herself caught in a world indifferent to her pain, ultimately becoming the prime suspect in a crisis spiraling out of control.

The trailer reveals a tense moment at a bank, where Henson’s character urgently needs to cash a check to pay for her daughter’s critical prescriptions. When the situation escalates, she is forced into robbing the bank, turning waiting customers into hostages. “I didn’t mean to do this; something inside of me broke,” she confesses in the trailer, her voice heavy with anguish. “I told them I need that money to get my daughter’s medicines. She’s sick,” she adds, revealing the desperation behind her actions.

Amid the chaos, Teyana Taylor plays a hostage negotiator striving to resolve the crisis peacefully and swiftly, trying to keep everyone calm. Meanwhile, the woman’s personal struggles deepen as she and her family face eviction from their home, raising a haunting question: can such desperate circumstances justify the unthinkable?

Straw promises to deliver an emotionally charged and suspenseful story, highlighting the harsh realities faced by those pushed to their limits. The film is set to debut on Netflix this summer.
