Carla Gugino is stepping into yet another chilling role, this time headlining the upcoming horror movie Winthrop, directed by Daniel Stamm (The Last Exorcism). The film, inspired by the critically acclaimed episode “The Lockbox” from the cult horror podcast Knifepoint Horror, will also star Lou Taylor Pucci (Evil Dead).
Coming off the heels of her casting in David Fincher’s Cliff Booth movie for Netflix—alongside Brad Pitt and from a screenplay by Quentin Tarantino—Gugino continues her momentum in the film industry with this haunting new project. Deadline reports that Winthrop is written by Emmy-winning playwright Justin Yoffe and will be filmed in Vancouver this summer.
The Horror Movie Plot follows Gugino’s character as she risks her life to protect her troubled and mysterious cousin, Winthrop (Pucci), who becomes the target of a terrifying supernatural entity. This story, rooted in the atmospheric dread of Soren Narnia’s Knifepoint Horror, promises to deliver a layered and lingering cinematic experience.
With over 10 million downloads, Knifepoint Horror has earned a dedicated following since its launch in 2010. The podcast is known for its minimalist yet psychologically gripping storytelling style, and Winthrop aims to bring that same unsettling tone to the big screen.
The film is being produced by Kearie Peak of Peak Pictures and Capstone Studios, with AURA Entertainment overseeing the U.S. theatrical release. MGM+ will handle both the streaming and linear premieres.
Producer Peak emphasized the emotional weight beneath the horror:
“Winthrop captures the eerie dread that makes Knifepoint Horror such a success. Carla Gugino is a perfect fit for the film, bringing a rare intensity and subtlety that aligns perfectly with the silent horror of Winthrop. Beneath the supernatural tension, the film explores how generational trauma festers and twists over time. It’s horror with weight, and it stays with you.”
Fans of Gugino’s haunting performance in Gerald’s Game may find this new role equally compelling, particularly within the Scary Movie genre landscape. Winthrop blends psychological unease with otherworldly terror—an ideal storm for horror enthusiasts looking for something both smart and chilling.
Whether you’re a long-time fan of Knifepoint Horror or a newcomer intrigued by the adaptation, Winthrop is shaping up to be a must-watch horror movie when it arrives on screens.
