XYZ Films has unveiled the official US trailer for Tatami, an indie sports drama that originally premiered at the 2023 Venice Film Festival to critical acclaim. The film, which explores political intrigue and personal sacrifice, is set for a much-anticipated release in art house theaters across the United States this summer, starting June 13, 2025.
Tatami centers around Leila, an Iranian female judo fighter, and her coach Maryam, as they navigate the intense pressures of the Judo World Championships. Midway through the competition, the Islamic Republic delivers an ultimatum: Leila must fake an injury and lose the match to avoid being labeled a traitor by the state. The film follows Leila’s impossible decision to either comply with the regime’s demands for the sake of her own and her family’s safety or to defy authority and fight for the gold.
Co-directed by Iranian actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi—who makes her feature directorial debut—and Israeli filmmaker Guy Nattiv, Tatami stands out as the first feature film to be helmed by both an Iranian and an Israeli director. The film’s screenplay is co-written by Ebrahimi and Nattiv, while the production team includes Adi Ezroni, Nattiv, Jaime Ray Newman, and Mandy Tagger.
