Kogonada, known for his visionary work on The Acolyte, directs the film. He cited Hayao Miyazaki as a key influence, embracing “a magical lightness” that grounds fantasy in relatable emotions. To achieve this tone, he enlisted legendary Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi, best known for scoring Studio Ghibli classics, to craft the film’s music. “It felt important to lean into the fantastic, but to also ground it in these landscapes,” Kogonada shared in a recent interview.
The ensemble cast includes Kevin Kline, Lily Rabe, Jodie Turner-Smith, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and Billy Magnussen, adding further depth to this genre-blending movie. The film, which melds Movie Characters with spiritual introspection, marks another career high for both leads. Robbie, still basking in the success of Barbie, and Farrell, riding the critical acclaim of The Banshees of Inisherin and HBO’s The Penguin, bring star power and emotional gravitas to their roles.
