‘The Pickup’ Trailer: Murphy and Davidson Team Up

by Chris Davies

Prime Video has released the official trailer for The Pickup, a high-energy action-comedy that pairs legendary comedian Eddie Murphy with Saturday Night Live alum Pete Davidson. Directed by Tim Story, known for Barbershop and The Blackening, the film blends sharp humor with a chaotic heist plot, delivering a fresh take on the classic odd-couple dynamic.

Murphy stars as Russell, a seasoned armored truck driver determined to make it home for his 25th wedding anniversary dinner. Davidson plays Travis, his inexperienced co-worker caught off guard by an unexpected complication: Zoe (Keke Palmer), a woman with whom Travis recently had a one-night stand, is now leading a criminal crew attacking their route.

The movie’s tension escalates as Zoe’s ambitions go well beyond robbing the truck’s cash. With guns drawn and personal stakes raised—including Russell’s wife (Eva Longoria) becoming a key leverage point—the two drivers must navigate a dangerous and unpredictable situation.

The trailer teases a blend of frantic action and unfiltered comedy, showcasing the chemistry between Murphy and Davidson. One memorable exchange highlights their contrasting characters: “I’m moving on to a new career,” says Russell. “You’re pivoting this late?” Travis responds. “How old do you think I am?” Russell counters. Travis quips back, “Well, you’re Black, so you look 40, but you could be up to 90.”

Both stars bring unique energies shaped by their SNL backgrounds, decades apart. On The Jennifer Hudson Show, Murphy praised Davidson’s comedic talent: “I watch the show all the time, Saturday Night Live, and I always thought he was funny, absolutely.” Palmer added, “[Davidson] looked up to Eddie a lot too. It was really cool to see y’all two together.”

Director Tim Story acknowledged Murphy’s broader impact on the film industry, saying, “He’s a big reason why I make the movies I’ve made.” The star-studded cast also includes Ismael Cruz Córdova, Marshawn Lynch, Andrew Dice Clay, Jack Kesy, and Joe “Roman Reigns” Anoa’i. The screenplay was crafted by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider, the writers behind Netflix’s comedy The Package.

The Pickup is set to premiere globally on Prime Video on August 6, promising a thrilling mix of action and comedy for fans of movie genre and dynamic movie characters.
