Disney+ has officially commissioned “Gold Land,” an original Korean crime thriller series written by Hwang Jo-yoon, the renowned screenwriter best known for his work on Park Chan-wook’s iconic revenge movie Oldboy.
Marking his streaming debut, Hwang Jo-yoon, whose impressive film industry portfolio includes Rampant and Memoir of a Murderer, crafts a gripping narrative centered on smuggling, loan sharks, and the struggle to escape a haunted past.
The series stars Park Bo-young (Light Shop) as Kim Heeju, a determined woman who stumbles upon gold bars linked to a smuggling ring, igniting a dangerous chase. Opposing her is Kim Sung-cheol (No Way Out: The Roulette), portraying Jang Wook, aka “Woogy,” a criminal with deep ties to Heeju’s past. Directed by Kim Sung-hoon, noted for Chief Detective 1958 and Confidential Assignment, the fast-paced story dives deep into crime thriller elements, promising intense drama and suspense.
Gold Land joins Disney+’s expanding Korean content lineup, which also features projects like Delusion, a vampire-themed series; Low Life, a tale of treachery over hidden treasure; and Tempest, involving a diplomat’s quest to uncover a plot threatening the Korean peninsula. The platform’s Korean originals have seen massive success, with Nine Puzzles becoming Disney+’s most-watched Korean title globally in 2025.
For fans eager to explore more about movie characters in gripping narratives or discover the latest trends in the film industry, Gold Land promises to be a thrilling addition to the streaming scene.
