A24 has unveiled the official trailer for Eddington, the highly anticipated new movie from director Ari Aster. Featuring Joaquin Phoenix and Pedro Pascal, the film is set during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic and explores the fracturing of community bonds amid crisis.
Set in the small town of Eddington, New Mexico, Eddington centers on a fierce political standoff between Sheriff Joe Cross (Phoenix) and Mayor Ted Garcia (Pascal), both vying for control as the pandemic heightens tensions. The trailer highlights their fraught interactions — from Phoenix’s sheriff demanding Garcia keep a six-foot distance to their bitter rivalry as they compete for the mayoral seat.
The official synopsis reveals, “In May of 2020, a standoff between a small-town sheriff and mayor sparks a powder keg as neighbor is pitted against neighbor.” This escalating conflict serves as a potent backdrop for exploring themes of trust, power, and division in extraordinary times.
Supporting performances include Emma Stone, Austin Butler, Luke Grimes, Deirdre O’Connell, Micheal Ward, Amélie Hoeferle, Clifton Collins Jr., and William Belleau, adding depth to the movie’s rich ensemble.
Eddington is set to hit theaters on July 18.
