Disney has released the full trailer for Freakier Friday, the eagerly awaited sequel to the beloved 2003 body-swap comedy Freaky Friday, originally starring Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Set to hit Australian cinemas on August 8, 2025, the new film promises to elevate the classic movie genre with a fresh, multigenerational spin that expands the humor and heart fans adored in the original.
The plot centers around Anna (played by a new cast) preparing to marry Eric Davies (Manny Jacinto), but her teenage daughter Harper (Julia Butters) and soon-to-be stepdaughter Lily (Sophia Hammons) are less than enthusiastic about their impending sisterhood. Chaos ensues when a mysterious palm reading at Anna’s bachelorette party triggers a four-way body swap involving Anna, her mother Tess (Jamie Lee Curtis), Harper, and Lily. Seizing the opportunity, the teens aim to sabotage the wedding by trying to reunite Anna with her high school sweetheart Jake (Chad Michael Murray), sparking a series of comedic and heartfelt moments.
The sequel brings back familiar faces like Mark Harmon, Christina Vidal Mitchell, and Haley Hudson, alongside new additions such as Maitreyi Ramakrishnan and Vanessa Bayer. Elaine Hendrix, known for The Parent Trap, makes a cameo appearance as a stylist connected to Anna’s pop star mentee.
Directed by Nisha Ganatra (Late Night, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) and written by Jordan Weiss, Freakier Friday is produced by Jamie Lee Curtis, Lindsay Lohan, Kristin Burr, and Andrew Gunn. Filming took place in Los Angeles during the summer of 2024.
The trailer teases a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern comedy, featuring nods to the original film including a Britney Spears vinyl and the return of the band Pink Slip. Jamie Lee Curtis herself describes the sequel as “freakier,” highlighting the intensified body swaps and a fresh dynamic between mother and daughter that fans can’t wait to see.
